Above the porch of Holy Trinity Church is a small room reached by a spiral staircase within the thickness of the wall. In pre-reformation days, the priests from Langley Abbey, visiting to say Mass, may have used it as overnight accommodation, or it may have been the living quarters of a secular priest appointed by
the Abbey to look after Loddon. In 1998, as a result of co-operation between the Church in Loddon, the Parish Council and South Norfolk Council, the room began a new chapter in its life as a Local History Centre. |
Today this room houses a permanent exhibition of historical information about Loddon, the Church and the local environment.
Covering such topics as Local Architecture, Employment and Agriculture, the displays consist of a variety of old photographs and other illustrations as well as specially commissioned text and new illustrations.
Many local people have been surprised by the wealth of historical information in the displays and visitors from afar have gained new insight into the life and times of a corner of rural South Norfolk.
Information leaflets on other local places of interest as well as the Loddon Town Trail, are available.
Much of Loddon's more recent history has also been published by the local history group as a series of 'Before Your Time'
booklets.
The Priest's Room is open whenever the church is open:- from Easter to November, 10am-5.30pm every day (entry may be restricted during service times).
Because of the low-level windows and difficult stairs, children should always be accompanied by an adult.
Sorry wheelchair access is only possible to the ground floor display panels
Admission is free, although there is a box for donations in the church.
